Here are a couple of really nice PilotTone monoblocks from the early era of hi-fi. According to the Sam’s photofact data sheet, these were available at least in 1953, if not earlier.

This attractive pair came in in great physical condition with little to no previous work done to them.  A complete power supply and coupling cap job was made, along with the addition of a grounded power cable, a power switch and a line fuse. A few drifted carbon composition resistors were also replaced.

New tubes all around will complete the picture, and I might just run them over the Audio Precision analyzer to see if they are well and truly hi-fi.

In this case. German F+T caps were used in the power supply rather than trying to keep the twist-lock multisection cap, which will allow future maintenance to be simpler.  In the preamp stages, dependable CDE Orange Drops were fitted for signal coupling.  Eliminating the twist-lock can opened up a convenient place to put the power switch without adding any new holes to the chassis.

These are very straightforward amps, and are a traditional output stage configuration rather than the ultralinear design that was just gaining popularity in 1953.
